Vinegar and Oil Recipe for Cleaning Hardwood Flooring?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I clean for a lady who has finished, hardwood flooring. She mentioned interest in having me use "oil and vinegar" to clean her floor. I’ve done a little bit of searching on google and though oil SOAP with vinegar are suggested for oiled instead of finished floors, for finished flooring, just some vinegar (1/2 cup) in a bucket of warm water is suggested – minus the oil. Does anyone out there know anything more about this recipe?

There are so many different finishes used on wood flooring these days, including some which are closer to plastic than any kind of varnish.

Oiled flooring just requires a good oil soap like Murphy’s. The method to use it is at the first site below.

Polyurethane-Coated Hardwood Flooring is usually cleaned with either oil soap in water or vinegar in water, see the second site (including comments). Unlike older finishes, polyurethanes can build up a static charge and also they are not prone to water damage.

Vinegar works well on glass, but was usually used on floors because it was available, not because it does a great job. However, to keep the lady happy, I would suggest using the minimum amount of a professional oil soap in water with only a tablespoon or so of vinegar added (white vinegar is better than cider vinegar). Just use enough of this solution as needed to remove the dirt. Do not leave this on to soak.

Cleaning schedule?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’m curious…Do you clean the house when it gets dirty or do you have a set cleaning routine that you follow every week/month or whatever?

Every Saturday is my cleaning & laundry day…

Does anyone have any tips on cleaning a very soiled carpet and what?

what products work best. I steamed cleaned it yesterday but the stains are still visible. Any info would be appreciated.

I used Oxyclean in my steam cleaner and it worked better than anything else I have ever used.

Anyone have a great house cleaning schedule that I could use?

what are some things that i can do to speed up/clean up my pc?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

please tell me HOW:
for example got to sart, my docs… etc
thank you!

Here is the best way to optimize your PC:

1.) Go to the Start Menu, hit run, Type msconfig in the text box. This will bring up a window with tabs click on the start up tab and delete programs you don’t need running on start up such as Toolbars, Ad Programs, Anti-Virus (if you do scans yourself). If you don’t know what something is don’t take it off start up but remove things you know you don’t need. Then Click "Exit without restart" when complete.

2.) Next, go through your programs and delete old programs you don’t use anymore. Do this by going into Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

3.) Then, Go to Start-> Accessories-> System Tools-> Disk Defragmenter. This will help compress the information on your hard drive.

4.) Now go online to Downloads.com. This is a safe site sponsored by CNET to download all kinds of trials and free programs from. What you need to get is something to clean your registry and delete temp data. Programs that I use as a tech are Registry Mechanic, jv16 Powertools and CCleaner. I normally use all three to clear out temp data and problems in my registry. They get rid of all the junk that accumulates in the computer. Once you have used them, remove them you only need to use them every once in a while when things start to bog down.

5.) Remove any documents that are no longer needed.

6.) Restart Your Machine. You should see a noticeable difference at this point.

These are generally the steps I take as a professional tech to get an old computer running up to specs again. If you still are experiencing slow performance, I recommend picking up and external hard drive and transferring all your music, pics and docs to it. It will save a lot of space and can remain plugged in at all times for extra storage!

I hope this helps you

How can I speed up my PC besides disk defragging, cleaning the disk, and using rambooster?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I’ve never used rambooster, really don’t know what it is. The way to boost RAM is to add as much as your motherboard and processor will take. If you run XP, you need at least 512 Mb of RAM. Uninstall programs you no longer use, or ISP’s you no longer use. Use Microsoft’s Live OneCare Cleanup Scan to clean the registry of junk. Keep spyware cleaned off – I use Ad-Aware almost daily, and SpyBot weekly.

I do all those things once a week, and my 4+ year old computer is still running as fast as it ever did, and as smoothly.

How do you clean your house in a fast easy way and then have time for packing?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

ok im going on a vacation with my dad tommorow and i decided b4 i leave i would clean my house for my mom as a little present cuz shes not going. But i have to do it eaither tonight and then just clean my room and pack tommorow or pack tonight and clean tommorow? what should i do? Also whats a fast and easy way to clean a house? Also any tips? and how can i have fun while cleaning (cant lisin to music it will wake my mom up) please answer ASAP thank u!
this is in beauty and style cuz i think ill get more answers here lol

Headphones for cleaning if you want to listen to music.
I would say that the best way would be to pack for 1/2 hour. And then if the packing is slowing down and you need a break, Pick up and organize for 10 minutes. You might be on a roll and want to clean more but as soon as you slow down the pace take a break and pack for another 1/2 hour.

Remember that you are going on vacation and you do have a deadline to pack. once you are done packing you can devote the rest of the timne to ccleaning.

This is what I would do and These are my two least favorite things to do. So each one is a break from the other and I stil move towards my goal.

God Bless You, ;-)

i’ve used reg cleaner defragged deleted temp files and cleared internet cache. what else can i do to speed up?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

ive the done the things i mentioned in the title but is there anything else i can do to speed up my comp? it’s not slow, but it’s definitely not fast.

Defrag does nothing towards speeding up your PC on modern harddrives. Just wanted to get that out of the way as only novices and unknowledgeable techs push this.

Here is a tech article explaining why this is so, and also gives 23 things techs can do that actually do speed up a PC.

BTW, 80% of the time I get a trouble ticket to come fix a broken/slow computer ends up involving me running AdAware on their system to fix the issue. Spyware is the silent killer (unless it involves pop ups or browser redirects) for computers. I’ve seen computers get brought down to a crawl by having about 20 plus processes running in the background. A lot of those processes are constantly accessing the internet, therefore sucking down your bandwidth as well.

I highly advise running

http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Anniversary-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html

or another top rated spyware remover (be careful as some supposed spyware removers actually are spyware or add spyware they intentionally ignore).

Number 2 on my list is to remove unnecessary programs from startup. Contact me through my Yahoo Answers profile email and I will walk you through using msconfig and help you remove from startup all of the programs that are not essential to your PC. Unfortunately, about every program you install thinks it needs to load onto your PC during startup, which is such a waste of your resources.

BTW, the poster that mentioned buying a new computer because XP is outdated is a typical user. XP runs faster and much more stable than Vista (obviously because it has been patched for a little under a decade now). Vista is a resource hog and has a lot of problems that haven’t been patched or hotfixed yet. That is why XP is still the standard in the corporate world.

Also, you should backup your data and run the restore disk (or format and reinstall windows if no factory restore disk provided) before you even think of buying a new PC. It should then run like it is fresh from the factory when you bought it.

RAM may help, but I would try the options I mentioned before even considering upgrading the hardware.

Good luck.

how to clean hardwood floors?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I have old hardwood floor and after I clean them, they still look dirty, how can I go about cleaning them and making them healthy enough for two small children.

That dirt may well be just the patina of the floor. As wood ages it takes on a different look from new – the wood becomes more ruddy and the shine is a bit fuzzier. Dark spots appear in various crevices, etc. Antique collectors and lovers of old homes find this to be quite attractive. The only way to get ride of it is to strip. Don’t do that…old floors are beautiful!! If you are using a wood cleaner that contains silicone (like Pledge) your floors will look dull. The more silicone that is added, the duller they will look. Forget about that. Clean them well with a fresh mop and plenty of warm soapy water. Scrub them GOOD! The water will be grey and need to be changed often. After they dry, get another clean mop and a heavy dose of wood oil (a good brand with no added color or citrus) and apply this to the floors with your mop. Buff to a high shine. They will look great. Think about sweeping and polishing wood floors, not mopping them with a harsh liquid.

Good luck!!

i need a practical schedule, using a housekeeper, in a house that has been neglected for a long time?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

we remodeled and everything is topsy turvy. I need to create a schedule:for deep and reg. cleaning, dusting, floors, bathrooms, vaccuming furniture, even airvents. THe windows are very needful of cleaning, and many other things, too numerous to mention. Changing sheets and doing laundry also has to be done and put away. Health issues prevent me from being much help, therefore i need a schedule to present to a hired housekeeper, we can use atleast as a guide. I’m totally overwhelmed, but this has got to be resolved. This will be a permanent job for one who does a good job. There is just my husband and i so once it is clean, the management should be fairly easy. The house of large be we only use part of it.

Go to FlyLady’s website. She has cleaning routines written out there and you will be able to put one together for your housekeeper.
