Is buying a Kirby Vacuum worth it?
I bought a Kirby vacuum and talked them down to $800 for a Sentria with carpet cleaner. Great vacuum, great cleaner, beyond terrible customer service. I am in Cols, OH and was told I could go pick up the bags. The store 1.2 miles away said they "don’t really sell them" but will when they have them. ???? You have to call to get the nearby dealers because they are "Indie Dealers". Basically kirby gives them to dealers and then don’t care and then pass them onto to dealers who don’t care because they think once they sell them it’s kirby’s problem. COMPLETE REMOVAL OF ALL RESPONSIBILITY. I talked to Debbie from integrated marketing at Kirby in Cleveland several times and got varying stories everytime. She gave me a list of dealers where I could get bags and when I couldn’t she backtracked into "We cannot control what they offer." Basically, you need to just order online. If you need anything in a pinch YOU ARE SCREWED. I love the vacuum but am angry enough to get rid of it but I am stuck because of the price. It works great but beware of these things. When the sales people come to your house have your carpet well vacuum’d, tell them to cut straight to the cleaning and no other demos and when they are done tell them you want the vacuum for $800 or you will get out your baseball bat. Seriously, they were at my house for 3 hours on a Saturday. I feel stupid for buying the Kirby and with all you go through but it performs phenomenally. You just feel like you need a two hour shower or need to call some type of abuse hotline after you call their management or dealers. You just feel used and unwholesome. Questionable tactics and employees associated with this product. I hope my experience can help other make the right decision. I have a temper and expect things to be easy but if you want a great vacuum and are saintly calm and patient, you may be able to look past all the nonsense. You think with such a great product they’d want to sell it with class. IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK TO SPEND $800 and be able to drive down the road and get something I need? I think I will go stare at my Sentria and my dirty floors while I wait 6-10 days for my bags to come in the mail!
Shudda bought a Dyson. Half what you paid and no extra added expense of having to buy bags. And guaranteed not to ever loose suction. Had an ELECTROLUX over 24 years and I’d still never own another vacuum but a Dyson. Sorry to hear about your trouble. It’s really something that the company wouldn’t be concerned knowing these are the type of stories going on the internet about their product. Personally, I’d NEVER pay $800 for a vacuum. And you said you talked him DOWN in price??? What the hell are they made of, GOLD???

Why on earth would you spend $800 on a vacuum? My $60 Hoover works great. If I couldn’t find bags, I could buy a new vacuum 13.3 times for $800.

A Kirby is a very good machine if you run a hotel, but to spend $800 on something that picks up fluff and grit from the floor is a bit steep. They are very heavy machines as well to lug about.
The best machine I have found are
Sebo. They are German and are the best vac you can get for around $300. They last years.

I bought one of those vacuums several years ago. I hated it within 3 mo. It was a tank to move! I am sure they are much better than when I bought mine over 25 years ago. The customer service wasn’t so hot then either. Right now, I use a Bissell that I paid $90. When it isn’t performing so well, I will get a new Bissell. Right now mine works great.
I think I’d write a letter to Kirby’s corporate off and reference this your little entry in the answers.yahoo. Tell them that you will keep badmouthing there product where ever possible till they improve their customer service. One little letter like that can cause a lot of damage for the company. You know, people search for "product reviews" on line…..I know I do, this one will come up! I would also go to epinions and leave a comment there!!! Unfortunately, you’ve learned a very valuable, expensive lesson! Good luck!
