Go rent a rug doctor from the local hardware store. They work wonders on dirty carpets.

Individual home steam cleaner are only good for emergency stain clean up, not for cleaning your whole house or room/s. What happens is the machine sprays down a cleaning solution and doesn’t have the suction to extract all the solution and dirt up. That leaves a soapy residue (soaponification) on the carpet. That in turn attracts more dirt to stick on those spots.
Leave it to the pros. If and when you do, make sure they use truck mounted equipment and use a post-rinse method. Don’t fall for the whole house for $60 scam – no carpet cleaner can make a living on that deal – "if it’s too good to be true, it probably is!"
