Spotless Speed Cleaning!

Should I tip the carpet cleaner?

WHUZZZ up peoples ??? Okay, I bought a home recently and the carpet needs cleaning. So should I tip the guy that is gonna come out and clean the carpets ? I am only gonna be charged $80. Whats your suggestion ?

.
Tipping is a custom that rewards exceptional PERSONAL service, which is why waiters and taxi drivers get tips. It is not customary to tip workmen/contractors of any kind.

In fact, I would highly recommend having a relatively stern "talk" with your carpet cleaner _before_ the job gets started. Let him know that you expect nothing less than a perfect job, and that you will not pay his asking price for anything less. Then watch him and make sure he is thorough, uses clean water, and so on. The $80 price is a come-on; they hope that you will ask them to do more than the agreed-upon area. Tell him that you’ll think about it if you’re happy with the work.

No tip. You gotta be fair but hard-nosed or you won’t get what you pay for.

Well, if he does a good job, then yes, tip him.

Don’t pay him the money until he’s completed the job. If you’re not careful, and pay him first, he might say he’s ‘going out to get some lunch’, and not come back to finish off the job, and you’ll end up with a carpet that isn’t fully clean, plus a $80 loss.

You don’t have to tip the man if he is the owner of the company. If the guy is an employee and he does a nice job then it would be proper to show your appreciation with a nice tip.

No I don’t think you need to tip the cleaner. I used to work for Kirby and cleaned carpets in order to sell them the vacuum cleaner…needless to say I knew they only wanted it cleaned and would not do the pressure selling they wanted…and didn’t assume they would buy one or tip me. The people who really liked it bought it and the people who only wanted the carpet cleaned did not. You shoudl only tip movers….they will break your stuff or steal it ; if you don’t.
