How to get my carpet clean?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I left for a few weeks and left my friend at my house.
She brought her dog and cat.
I have no money.
And my carpet is ruined (along with my coach lol).
Any tips on how to clean carpets (with no carpet cleaning machine)?
HELP PLZ.

It’d help to know what exactly is in your carpet – do the hairs bother you or has it been peed on – or worse!?

For hair, the best thing I’ve ever tried is scraping carpet with a rubber-soled shoe. Once you’ve done a bit the hair all clumps together and can be picked off by hand – not as much hassle as it sounds!

For pee you’ll have to wash it, which is a hassle without a proper wet vac. First check if any friends or family have one you can borrow, or if there are any companies nearby which will hire one out to you.

If not, try using something like Shake ‘n’ Vac, which is a powder that you sprinkle on the carpet and then hoover off with a conventional vaccum cleaner.

If you’re still really desperate then you’ll have to get a big bucket of warm soapy water, scrub it in with a big scrubbing brush, put a dry towel on it and stomp around on it to pull as much of the water back out of it as you can, then wait a very long time for it to dry out again completely.

This is a massive pain in the a*se though, so try the other methods first and maybe stick to just washing any really bad bits with water if you have to!

steam cleaning my carpet to get the smell of dog pee out! any tips? and what a good thing to put in the water?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

what can i put in the water to get the smell ALL THE WAY OUT…iv hurd viniger…what would be good?
should i go over the carpet once or twice with the steam cleaner?
and what are some good ways of cleaning deep down in the carpet cause i know the pee in deep in the carpet?
helppp!

thanks!

What you need to get it all out is a dirt extractor. A steamer won’t do it. You can rent or buy an extractor. If you want to, you could remove the pet stain without a machine but an extractor would make it a lot easier. When I had a dog who peed on the rug, I would go over the spot 4 or 5 times. You can tell when all the pee has been sucked up by the color of the water. I usually use plain ammonia in my rug shampooer. It works at least as well as the expensive carpet shampoos and costs a lot less. For pet urine, there are fantastic enzyme treatments that you can buy at the pet or grocery store. The enzyme product (Nature’s Miracle is a good one) will remove the last remnants of odor. After cleaning the carpet, I like to take an old towel or baby blanket and wipe any surface moisture. This really helps with the drying time and greatly reduces the chance of mold or mildew developing in the rug. Best of luck.

Carpet cleaning tips?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

We live in a rented apartment, so we do our best to keep our very light coloured carpet clean. We have two cats, so needless to say I’m used to having to do the odd spot cleaning (i use Simple green) and about once a year or so I use a steam vac throughout the whole place.
I’ve noticed there’s this one stain, fairly large in size, that seems to disappear after I do the steam cleaning and slowly (within a month if not a little more) starts to reappear, I’ve tried scrubbing it over and over…nothing
Any suggestions?
By the way, the stain is like a dark grey I can’t tell what is it though..and my carpet is a light beige type color.
Thank you in advance.

Something was probably spilled on your carpet and it seeped down into the padding. So, whenever you shampoo or spot clean the stain, you’re just getting the surface of it clean. The rest of the stain underneath the carpet is re-surfacing back. Plus, make sure that it’s completely 100% dry b4 you walk back over it after you’ve cleaned it. Walking over it can make the wet carpet stick to the padding and the stain will surface back. So, the only option to really get rid of the stain is to replace the padding.

Carpet cleaning question, do you rent a good cleaner, or have a method to share?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I’m not sure whether to rent a cleaner, or hire a man to do it for me, or even attempt it by hand :( although that sounds pretty extreme!

Any tips? I’m in the Manchester area if anyone has a trusted company to suggest.

if you want the job done properly call in a TRAINED carpet cleaner, rather than hire, there are a number of problems with a hire machine.
1/ for example my machine compared to say a rug doctor mine has ten times the pump pressure, nearly three times the suction and a heater that can heat up to boiling point as the water is fed.
2/when you hire a machine they will supply you with a shampoo this is a low ph shampoo ( for safety reasons if you have a non fast carpet a higher ph could make the dyes run ) the higher the ph the better the clean. a trained carpet cleaner would test the fabric and determine the ph that can be used safely. and the same goes for the pre wash if needed. the cleaners would also have a range of stain removers designed for specific jobs not just a universal one that nine times out of ten does not work. but forgetting about these problems what happens if you over wet does the carpet shrink ? or is the carpet you are cleaning color fast ? there are a lot of cowboys out there who spoil it for the legitimate cleaners, so pick carefully some of them no very little more than you do do not go for a cleaner because he is cheap if he is charging a price that looks to good to be true compared to his competition. believe me it is to good to be true many of these guys use cheap inferior machines, cheap quality cleaning solutions, i have even seen soap powder used, and they normally fly though the job leaving the carpets soaked for days ( then they smell ) and when they do dry they are not much cleaner then before, also because most of the cleaning solution is still in the carpet it works like a magnet so the new muck sticks to it and a few weeks later the carpet is dirtier then before you started ( TRY AND GET THEM BACK ) and many of them are not insured. legitimate carpet cleaners dislike these guys as much as the customers. Many of them use bait and switch tactics. The bait the cheap advertised price the switch the price you end up conned in to paying go to www.ritz-cleaners.co.uk and go to the page how to pick a cleaner this explains what questions to ask to make sure you don’t fall pray to these SO CALLED carpet cleaners

Tips for cleaning a heavily soiled carpet?

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Hi guys, I thought I’d attempt to clean my parent’s carpet today but it is very soiled. My Dad said bleach and boiling water is the best option, as it should bring up all the stain and won’t ruin the colour. However i was wondering if anyone had any extra tips or can recommend a different cleaner. I’ve heard washing powder/detergent can be used is this true?

I would not use bleach or any other heavy soap you cant get it up once you get on the carpet willl become sticky and collect even more gump. I get a plain old fashion string mop a good one a bucket of warm water maybe 3 drops of dish soap and scrub the dobbins out of it change your water very frequently and clean your mop frequently you will be shocked how clean it will come. P S squeeze your mop out good at all times do not use soggy mop.

Have you ever used a Bissell 9300D carpet cleaner?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I was wondering if anyone had used one of these machines. I have recently bought one and would like any cleaning tips or feedback that anyone could share.
I bought this machine for general cleaning and spot removal between professional cleanings.

I have used many of the Bissell carpet cleaning machines. I recommend that you spot treat pet stains or dark, noticeable stains first, either with a pretreatment or some of the undiluted shampoo. Wait 10-15 minutes, then shampoo as usual.

Ok, the first thing is that you don’t want to clean your carpet often, it isn’t good for the carpet.

Second, when you do clean it get it just as clean as possible before it dries. You will benefit from green carpet cleaners because others have toxic chemicals that will hang around in the air and contribute to asthma. Carpet mousse will clean it initially, but then it will be stuck in your carpet and trap any future dirt making it look dirtier than before.

Third, once your carpet is clean it will stay that way if you take off your shoes before going inside.

Below is a great article with tips for cleaning your carpet.

Would like to share something – Is this a useful cleaning tip please?

For carpet stains:a little bit of washing powder in warm water, apply to a sponge and it will clean any mark left behind by a dog or a toddler. My carpet looks brand new. And it smells nice too. Just thought Id share that..

it is a good tip, laundry soap does do wonders…I’ve even used to remove crayon from walls (washable paint only, of course!) cheers!

Cleaning Business Opportunities

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

If you are looking for a business venture to get into, then a cleaning business opportunity could be right up your street. In today’s busy world more and more people are turning to hiring house cleaners to take care of their homes. The cleaning business provides several options and opportunities to start and run a successful full or part time business, big or small.

People want and need all types of cleaning, from regular full general house cleaners to laundry specialists, carpet and upholstery and janitorial services.

The cleaning business is one business which provides a vast array of opportunities to get your foot into the door of the business world.

Good general house cleaners are always in demand, with more people following careers rather than staying home, reliable, professional cleaners are worth their weight in gold. The lay out costs are relatively cheap, with cleaning materials, equipment and reliable transport being all that’s really needed to get you started. Of course you will have to promote your business, but this can be done by advertising locally to begin with.

Another way to get into the cleaning business is to choose to go commercially. Hospitals, schools, restaurants and day care centres all rely on good hard working, professional cleaners to keep things in tip top shape. Although there will be a little more cost involved if you choose to go commercially the start up costs are still relatively small.

The hours you could work might differ from going into peoples homes, as offices, schools e.t.c could prefer night time or very early morning cleaners.

Specialist services such as carpet and upholstery cleaning is also another popular business to get into. The majority of these start out being run from home and then expand. The cheapest way to get into this specialist area is to start residentially rather than go for office cleaning, as this will need larger and more specialist equipment. Along with carpets many businesses also supply upholstery, fabric and drapery cleaning services.

As you can see there is a whole choice of cleaning business opportunities out there, it’s just a matter of choosing the one most suitable to you.

I want to clean the scrubbers on my carpet cleaner , any tips on how to remove hair besides picking by hand?

I always use my cat brush. Works like a charm. And considering the cat hates the thing, it means that I get at least SOME use out of it!
