good cleaning schedule?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Does anyone have a good cleaning schedule for house cleaning ? I have looked online and there really is not much, and some of the ones are really goofy like saying you can do dishes once a week but do windows every 2 weeks ? come on I do my dishes 1 or 2 times a day and windows when they get dirty but anyone got suggestions for dusting and other chores ?

I clean the public areas on Mondays: Living room, family room, dining room and hall. I clean
in the kitchen every day, and the bathrooms get attention every day as well–I do a swish–swish the toilet brush in the toilet–and swipe–hit all the surfaces with wipe–daily in the bathrooms.

I do errands on Tuesday and Thursday, as those are the days I drop the kids at school, and if not exhausted, I deep clean the bathrooms in the afternoons T and TH.

Laundry is every day, at least one load, and 2 on stay at home days.

Wednesday is project day: Like cleaining the laundry room, washing all the china in the dining room, windows, whatever. I just kind of go by what I whink needs it next, I don’t have a schedule
for that.

Fridays I do a quick dust and vac before the weekend, and I try to clean one kitchen cabinet shelf or drawer every week, and one drawer in a bedroom.

Saturdays are family Fun days, and Sundays are church and homework days. Sometimes I help one of the kids with their room on Sunday afternoon.

If we all pick up after ourselves daily, about 10 minutes, tops, it never gets too bad.

Housebreaking a Puppy Made Easy

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Housebreaking a puppy is probably the number one reason people don’t enter into dog ownership. There is no doubt that this is the hardest part of owning a puppy, but if the process is started immediately and taken seriously your puppy will be trained in no time.

Kennel Training

First and foremost, buy a kennel. This is as important as the toys the leash and the food dish. Kennel training is the easiest and most effective way to housebreak your puppy. Not to mention it will save you hundreds in cleaning bills and damage to your personal property. Forget all you that you have heard that kenneling a puppy is cruel. By providing a kennel for your puppy you are actually catering to his natural instinct as a den animal. Depending on your puppy’s breed, choose a kennel that can accommodate the puppy as a full grown dog. You will be surprised how much your mature dog will utilize their kennel as a place of refuge or just as a place to hang out years down the road. Whatever you do don’t use the kennel as a place to punish your pup. Make the kennel a fun and safe place your puppy will want to be.

Start the process immediately

After you pick up your cute fuzz ball at the breeder make the first stop the backyard or the outside area you plan to take your pup to do his business everyday. Get him acquainted with a spot. Dogs are creatures of habit that crave a schedule and familiarity.

Put together a schedule the entire household will follow on how to of care for your puppy. When everyone is on the same page it will be easy to housebreak your puppy. Puppies on average eat three times a day and sleep about 18 hours a day. After every feeding take him out to his spot and go with him. http://www.dogbreedadvice.com/ Yes, even when it’s below freezing and snowing. Take this into consideration when you’re deciding what time of year to bring your puppy home. You need to make sure he takes his outside trips seriously. Eventually you will be able to open the door and let him out, but not at first.

Newspaper training is a waste of time when housebreaking a puppy. You’re just making more work for yourself. You will end up training your puppy twice, and time is of the essence in the house breaking process. You can never take your puppy out too much. They must go out first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed. If you are accustomed to staying out till 3 am and sleeping till 10, then maybe you aren’t ready to have a puppy.

Now back to the kennel. As I mentioned before, puppies sleep a lot! So after a meal, a trip outside to do his business and some playtime, put him in his kennel. Repeat this and it will become habit. Start out leaving your puppy in the crate for short periods of time when you are home. Gradually extend the stay and take him outside after each time. Dogs in general will not mess where they sleep. If the housebreaking process is done correctly there will be minimal accidents. Don’t leave a puppy to run free when you are not home. You are just asking for a mess.

Bedtime

Right before you go to bed throw on your slippers and head out one last time with your puppy. When you come back in, give your puppy a treat and tuck him into his kennel for the night. All night! Don’t cave to the sad cries of a home sick puppy that would rather snuggle under your down comforter. Before you invite your puppy into your bed remember, cute 10lb puppies grew into 80lb adults! To ease the loneliness you can put a radio near the kennel or a leave on a night light. After a night or two, when your puppy realizes the crying gets him nowhere, he will stop. It’s so important to remain consistent in this house breaking process or it just won’t work. There is no such thing as a partially house trained dog. They either get it or they don’t.

Praise, Praise, Praise

Last but not least dogs crave praise. After every outside trip make a big deal. Scratch under his chin and give him a treat. Don’t scold your puppy for accidents unless you catch them in the act. Puppy’s memory capacity is small. He will have no idea why he is being punished after the fact. If you do catch him in the act, grab him by the scruff of his neck, as his mother would do in the den, and give him a firm NO! Then immediately clean the area with an odor eliminating cleaner.

So that’s it in a nut shell. Puppy training sounds a lot harder than it is. With a little patience and a kennel, you are on the path to puppy training success

does anyone have a sure fire way of keeping a house clean?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

there are 4 of us in the household. my husband and i work full-time we both full-time parents(of course) we have separete days off and it just seems that no matter what the house is a diaster. i know with 2 kids it should be "lived in" but this is out of control. i guess what im asking is how do i get a schedule to fit with us?

make it a habit and a rule for everyone in the house that any room they walk into must be tidier when they walk out.that way everyone pitches in a small way, but believe me,it will show.

Any advice on a good organizing/cleaning schedule?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Preferably one that will work with small kids in the house. (i.e. not constantly cleaning to the point I don’t have time to be with my kids.)

The washing goes into the machine as you walk through the house as soon as you get out of bed. Breakfast gets assembled while you are chatting to the kids. You have breakfast together and the kids if old enough, (and you can start this early) do some tidying or picking up or bed making in their own rooms while you do your room.

They then bring their toys to the living area while you tidy up after breakfast. I’m going to assume you have toddlers, so next it is all into the bathroom. They are in the bath while you clean the bathroom and chat to them.

Get them dressed and then it’s their tv time or DVD time while you shower and hang the washing.

They can then sit on the couch with a book while you vacuum the house.

Most of the work is now done – off to the park together! At their nap time you prepare most of the evening meal then have a sit down.

Home Improvement Twice a Year Maintenance Project

Friday, February 12th, 2010

To keep your house looking good and to keep it in the best condition you should plan on doing some regular home improvement maintenance twice a year. For those who live in places that have all four seasons you should do this in the Fall and Spring.

If you live in a place that doesn’t experience an extreme cold period then you should simply plan to do maintenance around April and October.

One of the reasons for this regular maintenance is to repair any damages caused by weather. Extreme weather conditions can really do some damage to a house. By doing regular maintenance twice a year you will catch damage before it snowballs into an extreme problem. So, in the end, twice a year maintenance will save you money.

The following list explains the projects you should include in your twice a year maintenance schedule.

- Clean the yard of debris. Leaves and other debris should be bagged up and disposed of so it does not damage the lawn, house or other structures.

- Clean gutters. Dirty gutters can lead to water damage for your roof, walls, windows and basement.

- Treat all wood on the exterior of the home. This includes gutters, trims and decks. You should only have to treat once a year and it should be done prior to winter or, if you do not get snow, the season you get the most precipitation.

- Look for foundation or wall damage. Caulk any cracks you see and make plans to repair any foundation problems once good weather comes.

- Trim trees or shrubbery away form house. Tree limbs hanging onto a roof are the main source for all kinds of bugs in the home. By simply cutting back the limbs you can avoid large problems with many household bugs.

– Repair screens and storm windows, if needed. You should also give all windows and screens a good exterior cleaning.

These simple tasks will probably take a couple days, so be sure to plan ahead. It is a labor intensive project, so recruit the family to help out. Everyone will benefit from this preventative maintenance and you will be thrilled at how many problems you can avoid by sticking to a twice a year routine.

How can I create a system or schedule to keep up with home maintenance and cleaning?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

I am a homeowner and moved into my brand new home one year ago. It is still not completely organized and now needs minor maintenance.

Living with me is my male friend and his 16-year old son. He also has a 10-year old girl and 7-year old boy who live here about 15 days per month.

Home is 3 BR/2.5 bath. The 16-year old chose to sleep on the sofa, rather than bunk w/ the 7-year old. I have my own master suite, but the other 2 bedrooms have large closets with shelves.

We also have 2 dogs inside that track in dirt from outside. The downstairs is wood and rugs and the hairballs collect after 3 days.

I want to have the house clean every day. Plus, there are several organization projects we need to do. There is also lots of maintenance that needs done. Things like organizing clothing, scrubbing walls, yard work, organizing pantry and cleaning closet, maintaining an inventory of household goods, etc., etc., etc….

It is very difficult to find a starting point and delegate tasks. It seems to take all effort just to keep the house partly clean.

Can anyone please help me? I have tried flylady.com and that doesn’t work for us. All other advice greatly appreciated!

I have been testing this system in my house that has made a huge difference in the cleanliness of our home. Kids are always wanting to do stuff, right? They want to watch TV, play outside, play video games, etc. For each child I have created a custom checklist according to their age and capabilities on my word processor. They have to finish their checklist daily before "playing". They are paid bi-weekly for this list, and if they skip a day, they get no pay. Also, I tack on another chore for the next day if they try and skip.

The checklist includes putting all their stuff away, cleaning their room, cleaning their own messes around the house including outside and anywhere else. Homework is always top priority.

It is mainly cleaning up their own messes and one or two chores for the entire household such as dishes, sweeping or vacuuming.

I put some blank spots on there where I write in special or extra chores needing attention.

It is a work in progress. I occasionally tweak the checklist to make it work better. It has definitely saved alot of stress in our house. They automatically do their checklist when they get home now and then I give it a quick lookover when I get home. Since it is kept up daily it only takes a matter of minutes to complete.

How can I stop hating house cleaning?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I have had clinical depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder for several years now. I am taking medication and seeing a psychologist, so I am getting treatment. The thing is I hate cleaning. Not just in a way that cleaning is annoying and I’d rather not bother with it. I despise cleaning with a passion. I don’t care if my environment is a complete disaster. I don’t care if I look like a slob, and I’m not convinced that cleaning needs to become a big priority in my life like it would need to be if I were to ever do it right. If I were going to clean, it ought to be done right, there shouldn’t be anything out of place, or any dust or dirt around. I have four kids though, and am a full time student, I simply don’t see the point in spending all of my spare time keeping my home as spotless as the one I grew up in. I also don’t see the need to prove to my nosy judgmental relatives that I give a sh*t about how they think I ought to be keeping my home, they have insulted me enough and I have no interest in proving myself to them. So I guess that means I am a perfectionist in some ways, and I am irritated by the idea that my relatives will believe I changed because they told me too.
I do try to do some things. The laundry gets washed but it almost never gets folded or put away. The floor gets vacuumed once a day, and we do eat from clean dishes, but I know that isn’t enough, and I can’t seem to make myself do more. I have tried, cleaning in fifteen minute intervals, tried having a schedule put up, tried getting my husband to help, tried getting a housekeeper but we ended up not being able to afford her. I’ve read organizing and cleaning books. I’ve tried to tell myself I need to do better for my kids sake but none of those things help when I just DO NOT CARE enough to get anything done. I do not even care if I’m alive half the time, so it’s rather difficult to find the strength to care about something as stupid and pointless as cleaning when I know that even if I do accomplish my goals I’ll just have to do it all over again tomorrow. Why does anyone even want to live if that’s what life is all about ? I don’t really know what to do.
I understand that germs are dangerous. I understand the concept of putting things away after I use them. If someone knows how to get a 5,4,3, and 1 year to put put their messes away then good for them. I expected that people would assume my problem was nothing more than laziness and that I was excusing it with my illness but that is simply not true. As I tried to explain, I have four children and am a full time student. If I didn’t want to change I would be here asking for help. When I try to clean it becomes overwhelming and often I end up breaking down in tears or having an anxiety attack. Please don’t judge me as lazy or making excuses. I am here for help not to have people judge my motives.

do some research about germs in the average household…its SOOO sick…you will definitely be more motivated if you know some nasty facts :)
cleaning is not pointless and it doesnt have to be difficult buy a swiffer, a magic eraser, some 409, and some lysol. That takes care of everything and hey maybe give you kids and husband some chores too ;)

How to Advance in a Housekeeping and Cleaning Career

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Overall employment of cleaning workers is expected to grow as fast as average for all occupations, as more office complexes, apartment houses, schools, factories, hospitals, and other buildings requiring cleaning are built to accommodate a growing population and economy. As many firms reduce costs by contracting out the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, businesses providing cleaning services on a contract basis are expected to have the greatest number of new jobs in this field. Although there have been some improvements in productivity in the way buildings are cleaned and maintained using teams of cleaners, for example, and better cleaning supplies’ cleaning still is very much a labor-intensive job.

Much of the growth in these occupations will come from cleaning residential properties. As families become more pressed for time, they increasingly are hiring cleaning and handyman services to perform a variety of tasks in their homes. Also, as the population ages, older people will need to hire cleaners to help maintain their houses. In addition, housekeeping cleaners will be needed to clean the growing number of residential care facilities for the elderly. These facilities, including assisted-living residences, generally provide housekeeping services as part of the rent.

Housekeeping cleaners perform any combination of light cleaning duties to keep private households or commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, hospitals, and nursing homes clean and orderly. In hotels, aside from cleaning and maintaining the premises, maids and housekeeping cleaners may deliver ironing boards, cribs, and rollaway beds to guests’ rooms. In hospitals, they also may wash bed frames, brush mattresses, make beds, and disinfect and sterilize equipment and supplies with germicides and sterilizing equipment.

Cleaners use many kinds of equipment, tools, and cleaning materials. For one job they may need standard cleaning implements; another may require a special cleaning solution. Improved building materials, chemical cleaners, and power equipment have made many tasks easier and less time consuming, but cleaning workers must learn the proper use of equipment and cleaners to avoid harming floors, fixtures, and themselves.

Cleaners and servants in private households dust and polish furniture; sweep, mop, and wax floors; vacuum; and clean ovens, refrigerators, and bathrooms. They also may wash dishes, polish silver, and change and make beds. Some wash, fold, and iron clothes; a few wash windows. General house workers also may take clothes and laundry to the cleaners, buys groceries, and performs many other errands.

Building cleaning workers in large office and residential buildings, and more recently in large hotels, often work in teams consisting of workers who specialize in vacuuming, picking up trash, and cleaning restrooms, among other things. Supervisors conduct inspections to ensure that the building is cleaned properly and the team is functioning efficiently. In hotels, one member of the team is responsible for reporting electronically to the supervisor when rooms are cleaned.

Building cleaning workers usually work inside heated, well-lighted buildings. Working with machines can be noisy, and some tasks, such as cleaning bathrooms and trash, can be dirty and unpleasant. They spend most of their time on their feet, sometimes lifting or pushing heavy furniture or equipment. Many tasks, such as dusting or sweeping, require constant bending, stooping, and stretching.

Cleaning supervisors coordinate, schedule, and supervise these activities. They assign tasks and inspect building areas to see that work has been done properly; they also issue supplies and equipment and inventory stocks to ensure that supplies on hand are adequate. They also screen and hire job applicants; train new and experienced employees; and recommend promotions, transfers, or dismissals. Supervisors may prepare reports concerning the occupancy of rooms, hours worked, and department expenses. Some also perform cleaning duties.

Building cleaners usually find work by answering newspaper advertisements, applying directly to organizations where they would like to work, contacting local labor unions, or contacting State employment service offices.

No special education is required for most cleaning jobs, but beginners should know simple arithmetic and be able to follow instructions. High school shop courses are helpful for jobs involving repair work.

Most building cleaners learn their skills on the job. Beginners usually work with an experienced cleaner, doing routine cleaning. As they gain more experience, they are assigned more complicated tasks. In some cities, programs run by unions, government agencies, or employers teach these skills. Students learn how to clean buildings thoroughly and efficiently; how to select and safely use various cleansing agents; and how to operate and maintain machines, such as wet and dry vacuums, buffers, and polishers.

Students learn to plan their work, to follow safety and health regulations, to interact positively with people in the buildings they clean, and to work without supervision. Instruction in minor electrical, plumbing, and other repairs also may be given. Those who come in contact with the public should have good communication skills. Employers usually look for dependable, hard-working individuals who are in good health, follow directions well, and get along with other people.

Advancement opportunities for workers usually are limited in organizations where they are the only maintenance worker. Where there is a large maintenance staff, however, cleaning workers can be promoted to supervisor or to area supervisor or manager. A high school diploma improves the chances for advancement. Some of them set up their own maintenance or cleaning businesses.

Supervisors usually move up through the ranks. In many establishments, they are required to take some in-service training to improve their housekeeping techniques and procedures and to enhance their supervisory skills.

A small number of cleaning supervisors and managers are members of the International Executive Housekeepers Association, which offers two kinds of certification programs for cleaning supervisors and managers: Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) and Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH).

The CEH designation is offered to those with a high school education, while the REH designation is offered to those who have a 4-year college degree. Both designations are earned by attending courses and passing exams and both must be renewed every 2 years to ensure that workers keep abreast of new cleaning methods. Those with the REH designation usually oversee the cleaning services of hotels, hospitals, casinos, and other large institutions that rely on well-trained experts for their cleaning needs.
