When I used to have a PC is was easy to defrag, reformat, amoungst other things. My Macbook has been running a little slow and I don’t know how to "clean house".

Usually adding more RAM will do the trick.
Or you can use Disk Utility. Generally because OS X doesn’t have a registry to get cluttered up it doesn’t need defragging.
